Sagawa's expression can be seen as an attempt to renew the relationship between “language and art” in contemporary art through an intensely physical approach.
In conceptual art, considered the root of contemporary art, language functioned as a “record of thought.”
However, Sagawa materializes intensely emotional words that everyone likely felt in their youth—such as “Release,” “Heart-pounding,” and “You and Me”—into massive sculptures.
And the act of carrying these works himself, performing in locations like Mount Fuji, Yakushima Island, Morocco, and New York, resembles a kind of modern “pilgrimage.”
Even the friction arising at the boundaries of daily life—like being scolded by a hot dog vendor in New York for his work interfering with business—becomes part of the “narrative” inherent in the piece.
Within this “pilgrimage,” his recent “Instant Power Spot” project is a critical endeavor to reconstruct the ‘sacredness’ that normally takes ages to form—instantly, using modern lightness and easily accessible “information.”
Transforming the lingering echoes of youth into weighty matter, then carrying it on one's own body to make a pilgrimage. Mr. Sagawa's work breathes tangible substance and soul back into the contemporary “words” adrift in the sea of information.
