Mitsuhiro Ohfune creates unique, non-reproducible works called “monotypes” using the screen printing technique.
His creative approach pleasantly subverts conventional notions of printmaking. It feels less like “reproducing a plate” and more like “drawing through the filter of a plate.”
By masterfully layering various techniques, Mr. Ohfune creates a gentle worldview that speaks to us through unique spaces and margins—dimensions unattainable by directly painted surfaces.
The monotype technique, born from a single, irreproducible print, feels like an inevitable choice to capture within the work the fleeting subtleties of time that never return, and the Japanese aesthetic sensibility of “ichi-go ichi-e” (treasuring each encounter as unique).
These scenes, enveloped in tranquility, always heal us and invite us on a journey of thought filled with peace.
